Today I am grateful that I'm a reader. I reconnected with a friend in another city who is recovering from a major health crisis. He has developed a unique neurological condition through his crisis and he sheepishly described it a bit. I recognised the condition as synesthesia, one of the conditions the main character in The Memory Man book series lives with. The joy and relief in my friend's voice was apparent. He said, his was the first time in 18 months he told a friend who believed him, and knew what it was, without thinking he was bonkers. Thank you, David Baldacci. Because I read the Memory Man books, I could be a better friend to someone, and that's everything.

  1. It’s heartbreaking that nobody has believed your friend for 18 months. I can imagine how difficult it must be to suffer both social isolation on top of a medical condition. He’s lucky to have a compassionate and well-read friend in you.

  2. This is one of the benefits of reading – exposure to new ideas and knowledge. They are a gateway to compassion because they share other people’s experiences, fictional or not. I glad to hear you were able to offer comfort to your friend when he needed it.
