The George and Molly Palmer-Jones series marks the beginning of the illustrious writing career of Ann Cleeves, with A Bird in the Hand (1986) serving as her debut novel. Set against the backdrop of the Norfolk coast and other English locales, this traditional mystery series follows the adventures of elderly birdwatcher George Palmer-Jones and his wife, Molly, as they investigate murders that they stumble across.

Birdwatching is the couple’s shared passion, and ornithology often intertwines with the mysteries, providing a unique lens through which to investigate.

While perhaps not as refined as Ann’s later works, her storytelling still captivates readers with engaging whodunits and vivid descriptions of coastal and rural landscapes.

With eight instalments recently reissued, the series offers a delightful introduction to Ann Cleeves’ narrative prowess and remains cherished by fans old and new.
