Deborah Crombie’s mystery series revolves around the investigations of Scotland Yard detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. Each book is a gripping blend of traditional British mystery and police procedural that is filled with psychological suspense, fabulously plotted mysteries, and lively characters.

Superintendent Duncan Kincaid is a perceptive detective who is charming, witty, and treats people with kindness. Sgt. Gemma James is younger than her cohort and is a pragmatic single mother from north London. Their personal relationships with each other, with their family, and with co-workers become an important part of the world Crombie creates in London, a city she knows well and thoroughly researches for her books.

Fans frequently describe Crombie’s series as “a fun read” with engaging whodunnits and they enjoy learning about London and its history. They also can’t wait to revisit Duncan and Gemma, characters that they care more deeply about with each book.

As Duncan and Gemma’s bond is a central part of the series, readers strongly recommend reading the books in order to fully enjoy the development of the characters.
