Last week, I met Tara for lunch and we decided to visit one of the many Elections Canada offices to vote. This was considered “early voting”, whereas Friday was the first day of “advanced voting”. The official date of the election and when the majority of votes will be cast is on April 28th. Friday’s advanced voting numbers showed a record turnout of 2 million voters, with some voters waiting as long as three hours to cast their votes.

During our early voting visit, Tara waited for perhaps 30 seconds before being guided to her poll worker and given her voting card. My wait was a little longer at 45 seconds.

Despite the fact that Tara lives in a different neighbourhood in Vancouver, she and I were able to cast our votes in the same office. In fact, while I was going through the process of casting my vote, my assigned poll worker told me that the Elections Canada offices were available to all Canadians and that someone from Ontario had visited her office (located in North Vancouver). Amazing! We Canadians are incredibly lucky to have wonderful support systems in place to exercise our democratic rights.

I know that another day of protests across the States was scheduled yesterday, so I am sending my love and support to all our American friends. Stay strong my friends. We are all in this together. Elbows and flippers up!
