"Three prominent Yale professors depart for Canadian university, citing Trump fears." Timothy Snyder and his wife Marci Shore and philosophy professor Jason Stanley (an expert in authoritarianism) have decided to teach in Canada. I thought our group would be interested in reading these articles as there's now a concerted attack on academic freedom. One of the effects of attacking universities and educational institutions is it initiates a "brain drain." Academics are put in an untenable situation, where, in effect, their freedom of speech is suppressed along with their research. This will have a serious economic effect in the long run not only for the post-secondary institutions but also for the country overall.

In other news, a poll by Nature, one of the world's leading scientific journal did a poll that found that 75.3 percent of scientists are considering leaving the U.S. after the administration cut funding for research. The highest contingent of researchers who are looking to move out of the country were those who are early in their careers. Nearly 550, out of 690 who responded to the survey, said they are considering leaving the U.S. Out of the 340 Ph.D. students, 255 shared the same inclination, the poll found.

Tara, this is immensely sad and also encouraging. I think that these individual decisions send a powerful message and unless respected faculty are willing to make these choices, our respected academic institutions will nt find the will to stand up to the administration and its clear intent.
