Tips and Resources From Your Margaret Atwood Book Club Friends:

Margaret Atwood’s writing defies easy categorization. Whether she is writing about women’s experiences or grief in her poetry or complex themes of power, gender roles, and identity in her novels, she always creates richly imagined worlds that reflect our own. For instance, although her novel The Handmaid’s Tale and MaddAddam Trilogy are labelled “science fiction,” she prefers the term “speculative fiction,” noting that “The Handmaid’s Tale does not depend upon hypothetical scenarios, omens, or straws in the wind, but upon documented occurrences and public pronouncements; all matters of record.” Her novel, Alias Grace, similarly draws from historical accounts yet expertly critiques contemporary issues. Her prose, poetry, and critical essays are known for their sharp wit, keen observations, and thought-provoking narratives.

“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories.”

Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale
Ava Cohen
“Thought-provoking is one word I would use to summarise Margaret Atwood’s works. She will get you thinking about the society in which you live, the roles we assume throughout our lives, and ultimately how we survive as individuals and together. That’s not to say her books are all serious and heavy. In fact, there are many that are wonderfully funny and ironic. For those that are interested in Atwood’s work in association with her poetry referenced in Louise Penny’s books, I encourage all to read her newly published short story compilation Old Babes in the Woods.”
