Jesse Q. Sutanto is the bestselling author of mystery novels such as Dial A for Aunties and Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers. She has also written several popular young adult thrillers and children’s books in the past few years.
Jesse grew up in a Chinese-Indonesian family, living in Singapore, Indonesia, and Oxford, England. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Oxford University in 2009 and has been writing ever since. Her first novel in the Aunties series, Dial A for Aunties, was published in 2021. Even before its publication, the book garnered significant attention, with Netflix winning a competitive bidding war for the film rights. Jesse won the United Kingdom’s Comedy Women in Print Prize for the book, becoming the first writer of color to win the award.
Her 2023 mystery novel, Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers, won the Edgar Award for Best Original Paperback and became an international bestseller. This novel has also been optioned for television, with Oprah and Mindy Kaling attached to produce. The second Vera Wong novel, Vera Wong’s Guide to Dating a Dead Man, is coming in 2025.
Jesse speaks Mandarin, Indonesian, and English with her family. She currently lives in Jakarta with her English husband, their two daughters. She has a large extended family with forty-two first cousins and thirty aunties and uncles, many of whom live just down the road from her.
