Tips and Resources From Your Ruth Rendell Book Club Friends:

Ruth Rendell has been called a master of suspense, and it’s something she knew she was good at. In a 2013 article, she wrote, “Suspense is my thing. I think I am able to make people want to keep turning pages.” She explained that it’s the element of “withholding” that makes for great suspense. Her books often delve into the darker, uncomfortable, and disturbing aspects of the human psyche, which heighten not only the suspense but also the surprises she springs on her readers. Although she wrote many standalone fiction novels, her Inspector Wexford series is her most popular creation. Across 24 books, Ruth said she never tired of writing about “Reg” Wexford. She wrote, “I don’t get sick of Wexford because he’s me. He’s very much me. He doesn’t look like me, of course, but the way he thinks and his principles and his ideas and what he likes doing, that’s me…I don’t have to think too deeply about what he’ll say next because I know him so well.”

“Like all true eccentrics, he thought other people very odd.”

Ruth Rendell, A Judgement in Stone
Dana N. Heller
“If you like books with plot twists that will creep you out (in a good way) then Ruth Rendell is someone you should read. She is one of my all-time favorite writers. Not is her Wexford series excellent, she wrote lots of fabulous stand-alones too.”
