
Mariann Edgar Budde
Mariann Edgar Budde is the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, serving as the spiritual leader for 88 congregations and 10 Episcopal schools in Washington, D.C., and parts of Maryland. She is the first woman elected to this role and serves as chair and president of the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, overseeing the ministries of the Washington National Cathedral and its schools.
Passionate about the gospel of Jesus and the mission of the Episcopal Church, Bishop Budde is dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, expanding congregational engagement, and developing new expressions of Christian community. She emphasizes striving for justice, peace, and respecting the dignity of every individual.
Consecrated as the ninth bishop of Washington in 2011, she also served as Interim Dean of the Washington National Cathedral from 2016–2017. Before her election, she was rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Minneapolis for 18 years.
Bishop Budde earned a B.A. in history, magna cum laude, from the University of Rochester, and both a Master of Divinity (1989) and Doctor of Ministry (2008) from Virginia Theological Seminary.
