Sixty-year-old grandmother Emily Pollifax is widowed and bored with her life. Searching for purpose and something more to do than garden, she goes to the CIA and offers to serve as an agent, and they hire her! So begins the Mrs. Pollifax series.

Readers describe Dorothy Gilman’s series as delightful, hilarious, and packed full of adventure and suspense. Dorothy was an avid traveller and visited many of the countries her heroine winds up in. With her wonderful descriptions, she transports her readers to the exotic locales around the globe and even includes a real person or two.

As for Mrs. Polifax, the character breaks the mould when it comes to “spinster detectives” and fictional spies as much now as it did when she first appeared in print in 1966. The character is so funny and endearing that she wins over readers of all ages.

The fourteen-book series does not have to be read in order but is better enjoyed doing so as the characters develop throughout the series.
