Each book follows the 40-something sleuth, who has a penchant for fine wines and a love of music, as he investigates each crime. Originally, Cast Iron (Book 6) was intended to be the final book in the series, resolving the last two cold cases. However, Peter May later wrote Night Gate, the seventh and now final book in the series.

Peter May portrays Enzo as a complex character dealing with tragic loss and a broken heart, making him a figure readers come to sympathize with.

Although each book can be read independently, it is more impactful to follow Enzo and his investigations in the order they were written.
