What do you make of Gamache’s relationships with the different members of his team, from Beauvoir to Nichol in this book? Did you notice differences with later books in the series?

Gamache doesn’t trust Nichol but doesn’t know why. “All the evidence was that Agent Yvette Nichol had shed her arrogance and the huge chip she lugged around. Since joining them the day before she’d proved she could take orders, could take guidance and criticism. She’d worked hard and proved herself a self-starter, and had done good work finding out about Crie. And she’d even booked herself into the B&B and paid for it herself.” When she protests to Gamache that she has changed and they shake hands, she thinks “the asshole believed her.” She takes a phone call from an unknown person; she assures that person she will win him over because she knows how important it is. Another time, Gamache told her his plan which he said she should keep to herself. Another phone call where she told “him everything Gamache had said to her.” Francoeur? He sent Nichol to Gamache. Part of a ploy because of Arnot?

Gamache seems to spend much more time instructing Agent Lemieux than Nichol because of his eagerness to learn. Lemieux wants to impress Gamache “to get the job done.” He takes notes because there is “a lot riding on gaining Gamache’s trust.” He seems to do well enough that Gamache recommends a promotion for Lemieux. Lemieux doesn’t like Nichol and her camaraderie with Beauvoir. Superintendent Brébeuf tells Lemieux that he has done well although Lemieux doesn’t feel good about what he has done. Brébeuf is working take down Gamache. How much does Gamache really know about these two?
