What’s your favourite passage or scene that demonstrates Louise’s humour in A World of Curiosities?

Even though there is so much tragedy in this book there is still humor. One or two line quips amongst friends that lighten the darkness. Such as the conversation between Myrna and Armand about Amelia. “Guess who’s up there,’ said Myrna. ‘Our mini-Ruth? asked Armand.’ ‘If Ruth and a trash compactor had a child, yes.” Ruth with her artistic brilliance and Amelia with her analytical skills would be quite a team. Sarcasm punctuated with morse code. I would love it if Louise would dedicate part of another book to this dynamic duo working together.

This one involves the brash, full of himself Jean-Guy Beauvoir speaking to Gamache. “‘I heard a shot. You okay?’ he asked when he got back into the driver’s seat. ‘I am. You heard the shot, but stayed here. You didn’t leave your post?’ ‘You sound surprised. The truth is, I was getting caught up on emails. I’d have gone eventually.’ Gamache gave a small grunt of amusement.” It is reassuring to meet a Jean-Guy who can poke fun at himself.

“There was a clicking sound from Agent Choquet. But no actual words. Beauvoir stared at her, then noticed that Gamache was looking at the table and fighting unsuccessfully to suppress a grin. “What?” said Beauvoir. The clicking was Morse code. Bullshit. Bullshit.”

Another one with Agent Choquet: “We had a guest in the B&B, and when she checked out, the elephant was gone too. It was in her room.” “Sounds like an old Marx Brothers routine,” said Amelia. They looked at her. How someone her age, and with her background, knew so many things was mystifying. Even Beauvoir had no idea who the Marx Brothers were, except that one of them had something to do with Communism.”

That’s a great one too! I so hope Amelia returns in “The Grey Wolf” and/or future books.
