I loved the book. It had a real emotional punch at the end which I wasn’t expecting. I was thinking it would remain light and frothy with the murders not having any genuine impact on the main characters but that turned out not to be the case at all. But it makes sense when I look back at how Osman slowly, brick by brick, lays down a path for the reader to care for each of the characters, including the supporting ones. He also gives each of them secrets and motivations which kept me guessing as to who was the culprit. There are also some very clever “red herring” but the clues are there right from the start. I kick myself about not figuring out the killer of Peter Mercer. Did anyone figure that one out before the end?
The humour is also top notch. My favourite comedic scene of the book was when DCI Chris Hudson visits the Thursday Murder Club for a chat and he ends up “interrogated” by the gang as he awkwardly sits sandwiched between Ibrahim and Joyce balancing a tea cup and piece of cake. It’s just masterful and I laughed so much, especially at Chris being aware that his very own police interrogation techniques were being used against him.
