His godfather nodded. “But it was compassionate to spare them. Life can be cruel, as you know. But it can also be kind. Filled with wonders. You need to remember that. You have your own choice to make, Armand. What’re you going to focus on? What’s unfair, or all the wonderful things that happen? Both are true, both are real. Both need to be accepted. But which carries more weight with you?” Stephen tapped the boy’s chest. “The terrible or the wonderful? The goodness or the cruelty? Your life will be decided by that choice.”
This is Stephen and Armand, talking about the Burghers of Calais in All The Devils Are Here.
Our recent discussions and all the events in the past days, weeks and months have weighed heavily on many of us. Yet this quote from ATDAH and in reference to the Burghers of Calais seems so relevant to current day events and sentiments. For me, so much seems so unfair. Too much is unbelievably unfair. It’s impossible to avoid reading the headlines but I wouldn’t want to anyway. We need to know what’s happening. Knowledge is power, as our discussions have told us. Yet here is this old quote from this old book and the wisdom here is just as wonderful today as it was when I read it years ago.
So when we are thankful for having our friends here, or feel comfortable in the safety of this environment, or imagine a day when good leaders make our world a better place for all, it isn’t that we are naive or unaware. We are making the choice to look for the good and spend time there.
My friends, I hope you all fill your lives with as much goodness as you can find. I hope you are surprised by joy every single day. And I hope you focus on the wonderful and spend as much time in that happy place as you can.

That’s a lovely thought, Mei Lan.
